Fun all year round
Winter and summer, the capital offers all kinds of opportunities for family activities. In the Jardin du Luxembourg, children play in the sand pits and race along the pathways under the attentive eye of their parents, seated in green chairs or on stone benches. Children can also take a pony or cart ride, push small wooden boats with poles in the large ornamental pond, play on the swings or ride the merry-go-round. And when they are ready for a snack: two cafes, in the shade of the chestnut trees, serve hot chocolate, waffles, pancakes and ice-cream as well as savoury snacks. Some parks and gardens, such as the Jardin des Tuileries and the Jardin d'Acclimatation stage puppet theatre shows.

Jardin d'Acclimatation
The Jardin d'Acclimatation was opened in 1860 by Napoleon 3rd at the same time as the Bois de Boulogne. Designed by the architect, Gabriel Davioud and renowned landscape gardener Jean-Pierre Barillet Deschamps (designer of the Buttes-Chaumont) the park contained lush flora, greenhouses and even some exotic animals. After the war of 1870, the garden gradually moved away from its role of acclimatization of exotic species in favour of a more playful direction. However, the garden has retained its educational vocation and organizes numerous workshops throughout the year.
And since last year, there is even more to enjoy at the Jardin d'Acclimatation: a wooden climbing course for children age 6 to 12 years and the Belvedere de l'lmperatrice, a tree-lined promenade with views of the Eiffel Tower! Other attractions include distorting mirrors, freely-roaming animals, a small farm and a large aviary, as well as the Rocher aux Daims (animal sanctuary), renovated in 2011.
The garden is synonymous with its little train - now electric - that transports visitors from the Porte Maillot, as well as the "enchanted river", a vestige from the Universal Exhibition attractions dating back to 1926!
Another reason to visit this green setting is le Carnaval: one of the highlights of the park and one of Paris's biggest carnivals. After submarine corsairs and overseas fairies last year, the theme of this year's carnival is a tribute to Japan, in the guise of manga characters and Samurai. The festivities feature make-up workshops, sweet throwing tournaments, the big musical parade, giant puppets and lots more!

Circus
Circus tents sprout like mushrooms in the Bois de Vincennes and the Bois de Boulogne as the Christmas season draws near. Children and adults crowd into the tent and settle down to wait impatiently for the clowns, trapeze artists and acrobats on horseback to make their entrance. Some troupes, such as the Cirque Romanes, which specialises in the Eastern European circus tradition, stage their acts all year round. The Espace Chapiteaux at the Parc de la Villette regularly hosts very inventive circus troupes that turn the art of circus on its head.

ZOOS and other animals
Paris has all kinds of wild animals to see, whether it be hippopotamuses or sea horses. The forty-three tanks at the Aquarium du Trocadero, inaugurated in 2006, host an infinite variety of species, from angel fish to golden trevally and thousands of others. The calm of this underwater world is offset by the excitement of the zoo. At the Jardin des Plantes menagerie right in the heart of the capital, near to the banks of the Seine, you ll be able to see ostriches, antelopes, pandas and parrots. Across the other side of the garden, in the Grande Galerie de l'evolution of the Museum d'histoire naturelle, there are dinosaurs, mammoths and other life-sized animals to discover. A few months ago, the Galerie des enfants opened a permanent exhibition for 6 to 12-year-olds based around 4 themes: the town, the river, the tropical forest and the whole planet.

Tea rooms and ice-cream parlours are great favourites with children. Located under the arcades of the rue de Rivoli a short walk from the Louvre, Angelina is famed for its hot chocolate. Berthillon, on the Ile Saint-Louis, has been adding to its range of ice-creams and sorbets since 1950 and now has an astonishing variety of flavours to titillate your taste buds, whatever your age: calisson, cappuccino, praline and pine nut, pineapple, white chocolate and tropical fruit cocktail, to name only a few.
